Discover what you can do to make the sea plastic free, learn about dozens of different kinds of eggs and experience the feeding of a variety of ocean animals during April’s Family Programs at the Museum of Coastal Carolina.
Here’s a complete breakdown of what’s on the schedule at the Museum during the month of MY:
Tuesday at 11 a.m. – Sea Tales: Listen to stories starring animals or exhibits displayed at the Museum and complete interactive crafts or science activities based on each story:
May 6 – Bloom by Julia Seal – Once, the ocean was full of friends. Then a little jellyfish notices that things are changing–friends are disappearing! He sets out to discover the truth and learns that everyone has a part to play in protecting the careful balance of the ocean. “Bloom” refers to a substantial increase in jellyfish population that can be caused by climate change and pollution. We will read this inspiring tale and make a fun jellyfish craft.
May 13 – Stefano the Squid: Hero of the Deep by Wendy Meddour – Stefano the squid is surrounded by amazing animals: diving dolphins, colorful fish, and scary-looking anglerfish. These incredible creatures have grabbed the attention of the film crew from Deep Sea TV, but the crew never seems to care about filming Stefano. “Why don’t they like me?” he wonders. Then one day, a diver gets into trouble. Can Stefano—just an ordinary common squid—save the day? We will find out if Stefano can save the day and make a squid craft.
May 20 – Oozey Octopus by Suzanne Tate – A Tale of a Clever Critter. Learn little known facts about a solitary, intelligent creature that surprises the scientific community. After we read about these incredible creatures, we will make an octopus craft to take home.
May 27 – Spiny Sea Star by Suzanne Tate – A Tale of Seeing Stars. Learn all about the star-shaped creatures commonly known as starfish. A better term for them is “sea stars” because they are echinoderms, not fish. After the story, make your own sea star craft to take home.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11 a.m. – Touch Tank Feeding: With staff and trained volunteer assistance, gently touch the sea creatures living in the Museum’s Touch Tank and watch trained volunteers feed the animals.
Thursday at 11 a.m. – Ocean Commotion.
Every Thursday, learn about animals that live in the sea and how they are affected by marine debris through a series of activities.
Investigate our enviroscape to learn how marine debris travels from land to sea, dig through a pretend ocean and see if you can determine trash from food, and learn ways to keep the sea plastic free by sorting recycling.
