It’s Summertime at the Old Bridge!
It’s time to start thinking about how to entertain guests and visitors or determine what you will do when you have had enough beach, shopping or golf this summer. What about a visit to the Old Bridge?
Beginning Tuesday, May 31st, the Old Bridge museum and the store will be open Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:00pm to 8:00pm and Wednesday mornings from 10:00am to 1:00pm. The Old Bridge museum and store are located at 109 Shoreline Dr. West, Sunset Beach NC. There will be volunteers from the Old Bridge Preservation Society ready, willing and able to share with you the history of the Old Bridge.
Volunteers will describe for you a time in Sunset Beach when life was a bit more simple, a little less hurried, and certainly picturesque. Visitors can go into the Tender House, sit in the actual chair that Bridge Tenders used and see the equipment board that was used to operate the traffic signal and sound the siren. There are videos playing that explain the mechanics of how the Old Bridge operated and how it was constructed so that you can get a complete picture of the importance of the Old Bridge to the Sunset Beach community.
During the summer on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays there are special programs planned for visitors. All programs are weather permitting so if there is doubt before venturing out, check the website www.oldbridgepreservationsociety.org or call 910.363.6586.
Beginning June 28 through August 9, each Tuesday evening there are a variety of programs planned all pertaining to the topic “Life Along The Coast”. Check the website or call 910.363.6586 to be sure of the specific program time and topic. All programs are free unless otherwise indicated. Visitors may like to bring their own lawn chair.
On Wednesday, starting June 29 and going through August 10, the Young Explorers Program meets from 10:30 to about 12:00 on the Old Bridge grounds. The Young Explorers Program is perfect for all young people between the ages of five and 13. (An adult should accompany their children to the program.) Volunteers from the Old Bridge Preservation Society will provide activities that allow the child to learn more about the Old Bridge and the community. They will help the children create a craft that connects to their morning’s learning, which they can then take with them as a memento of their visit.
Programming for Thursday Night at the Old Bridge is called Family Fun Night. Family Fun Night begins on June 30 and goes until August 11. Starting at 6:00 there will be a program that has activities appropriate for the whole family. Programs may include a Family Cookout with games and activities, Pirate Night, Bingo and S’mores and much, much more. Check the website for specific program topics and dates.
Of course, what would Summer at the Old Bridge be without the Sunset Beach community gathering on the Fourth of July, starting at 9:00. One of the best vacation photo opportunities around, children (and adults) should come ready to parade across the Old Bridge with decorated bicycles, wagons, strollers, and sneakers! Uncle Sam traditionally leads the parade with patriotic music playing. Following the parade, the children will engage in old-fashioned games and activities. A fun time will be had by all.
You will not want to miss any of the events at Summer at the Old Bridge. The Old Bridge museum and store are located at 109 Shoreline Dr. West, Sunset Beach NC. Questions, please call 910.363.6586 and of course, be sure to check the website www.oldbridgepreservationsociety.org as schedules may vary and are weather dependent. The Old Bridge Preservation Society hopes to see you there!
