OCTOBER EVENTS!
Enjoy hauntingly fun family programs that will inspire curiosity for visitors of all ages at the Museum of Coastal Carolina in October:
- Thursdays at 11:00 am – Sea Tales: Listen to stories starring animals or exhibits displayed at the Museum and complete interactive crafts or science activities based on each story:
- October 3 – The Bat by Elise Gravel – Did you know that bats live everywhere except Antarctica, and they hibernate like bears?! The Bat merges educational content with lighthearted, wacky storytelling about these intriguing creatures. Following this clever story, visitors will make bats from plastic spoons.
- October 10 – The Swamp Where the Gator Hides by Marianne Berkes – Under the algae that carpets the swamp, near the duck who paddles in ooze, close to the turtle who takes a snooze . . . hides a gator! Discover the fate of all these swamp residents and more, then make a popsicle stick alligator.
- October 17 – The Spider by Elise Gravel – In this hilarious nonfiction book about spiders, visitors will learn fun facts about these fearsome creatures. For example, did you know that female spiders carry their eggs in a silk purse? Once this story concludes, visitors will make spiders and spider webs.
- October 24 – Bloom by Julia Seal – Once, the ocean was full of friends. Then a little jellyfish noticed that things were changing, and friends were disappearing! Follow a jellyfish’s journey, learn what everyone can do to protect the careful balance of the ocean, and design your own jellyfish.
- October 31 – If Animals Trick or Treated by Ann Whitford Paul – What if animals did what YOU do? Owlet and Mama may carve pumpkins and read scary stories feather to feather, and Zebra Foal may prance-prance in a costume of spots! Following this creative story, visitors will make a pumpkin craft.
- Fridays at 11:00 am – Touch Tank Feeding: With staff and trained volunteer assistance, gently touch the sea creatures living in the Museum’s Touch Tank and watch trained volunteers feed the animals.
- Saturdays from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Climate Action Heroes: Take a deeper dive into our newest exhibit, Climate Action Heroes with family-friendly, fun, and interactive activities! Climate Action Heroes is developed by National Children’s Museum and distributed in partnership with Nickelodeon Our World.
Each week will feature hands-on self-guided science and craft activities exploring a different characteristic of a Climate Action Hero. Visitors can also look for evidence of Climate Action Heroes throughout the museum with a special scavenger hunt. October’s Climate Action Hero is the Community Captain!
This month, area Community Captain organizations Encounter NC, Ripley’s Aquarium, and the Children’s Museum of Wilmington will staff tables and provide activities for visitors to enjoy:
- October 5 – Encounter NC aims to increase awareness of factors influencing shark behavior, enhance the safety measures for beach activity, empower communities to enjoy the ocean responsibly, and foster a deeper appreciation for marine ecosystems. Activities will include hunting for and identifying types of shark teeth, learning about the North Carolina Bull Shark Project with Minorities in Shark Sciences, and completing marine-themed coloring pages designed by local artists.
- October 12 – Ingram Planetarium will lead a fun activity exploring how water is filtered on the International Space Station.
- October 26 – Children’s Museum of Wilmington and Ripley’s Aquarium:
- The Children’s Museum of Wilmington provides a welcoming and engaging environment that promotes hands-on art, science, and literacy-focused learning for all children and their caregivers, and they will provide a sea spider craft and fun facts about sea spiders.
- Ripley’s Education Department delivers an educational experience that promotes the conservation and exploration of our natural environment through immersive learning and engaging programs. Ripley’s will explore the strange and curious nature of sharks by presenting biofacts and activities including the mock dissection of a shark, an activity to highlight sharks ampullae of Lorenzini (discover what this is and why it’s important!), and a craft.
