Explore dark matter through the dome film Phantom of the Universe, showing for the first time at Ingram Planetarium this fall. Messengers of Time & Space, another new film, also makes its way onto the schedule along with old favorites Magic Globe and Voyage to Distant Worlds.
Laser shows give an early taste of Halloween with Stranger Things and Fright Night.
With educational films that inspire curiosity and spectacular laser music shows that will create out-of-this-world memories, Ingram Planetarium has something for visitors of all ages.
Dome Theater Shows: Every Thursday through Saturday, explore remote areas, journey to the farthest reaches of space, or discover the stars you’ll see in your own backyard in our immersive theater – doors open at 10:30 am:
11 a.m. Magic Globe – On vacation at her grandpa’s, a little girl named Mia accidentally discovers a mysterious piece of astronomical machinery. Edmund, Mia’s eccentric uncle, tricks the girl into using the tool’s secret powers to change the world’s seasons. She realizes the consequences of what they are going to do, but Edmund doesn’t want to let the plan go.
Noon Voyage to Distant Worlds – A tour of the objects in our solar system from the sun out to the Kuiper belt.
1 p.m. Messengers of Time & Space (New!) – Messengers of Time and Space is a planetarium show made possible through a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation called Gemini in the Era of Multi-Messenger Astronomy (GEMMA), which is aimed at advancing the leadership role of the International Gemini Observatory in the area of multi-messenger astronomy. The planetarium show highlights how Gemini will work together with observatories that monitor the night sky for exciting astronomical events that change with time, such as the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
2 p.m. Phantom of the Universe (New!) – Phantom of the Universe is a planetarium show that showcases an exciting exploration of dark matter, from the Big Bang to galaxies to a deep underground experiment to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The show reveals the first hints of its existence through the eyes of Fritz Zwicky, the scientist who coined the term “dark matter.” It describes the astral choreography witnessed by Vera Rubin in the Andromeda galaxy and then plummets deep underground to see the most sensitive dark matter detector on Earth, housed in a former gold mine.
3 p.m. The Sky Tonight! – Tour the planets, constellations, and other celestial events happening in the night sky above our community. Then, next time you walk along the beach on a clear night, you’ll be able to identify the celestial sights you see.
