The local chapter of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs is toasting the Kentucky Derby with its own event.
The GFWC-South Brunswick Islands Woman’s Club will hold its second annual Juleps & Jazz Kentucky Derby Fund Racer from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, at 101 Stone Chimney Place in Supply.
The $25-per-person ticket includes hors d’oeuvres, a raffle and silent auction, a cash bar with jazzy juleps and live streaming of the 141st Kentucky Derby.
Women are encouraged to pull out their favorite big hats or get creative for the event’s derby hat contest. Prizes will be awarded for most glamorous and most creative.
This year there will also be a new men’s contest for “most dashing derbster.”
Proceeds will go to support several charities including Relay for Life, Hope Harbor, SECU Hospice House and the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina.
Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $3,000 for Relay for Life.
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs of the South Brunswick Islands (GFWC-SBI) is a chapter of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), one of the world’s largest and oldest non-denominational, non-partisan, International Volunteer service organizations for women.
Originally chartered as the South Brunswick Islands Woman’s Club (SBIWC), the GFWC-SBI received its charter from the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of North Carolina/NC Federation in April 1989. Since then, club membership has grown from 16 to about 45 serving the community through charitable projects and annual events, including scholarships, the Quarter Auction, Juleps & Jazz and SOUP-er Bowl Saturday.
Cindy Hewett, 2015 GFWC-SBI president, said over the past 27 years, club members have volunteered more than 50,000 hours, allowing the club to contribute about $500,000 in monetary and in-kind donations to many local, state and international groups. Beneficiaries have included the South Brunswick Interchurch Council Food Pantry, the WINGS Ministry — Backpack Buddies Program, Hope Harbor Home, Brunswick Family Assistance, Lower Cape Fear Hospice, the Ronald McDonald House, March of Dimes, The Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, Rourk Public Library, Brunswick County Literacy Council, The Full Belly Project, Widow’s Mite Experience and the Wounded Warrior Ride.
