The Heartbeat of Sunset Beach is a 45-minute documentary that premiered in early 2015. The film was created, filmed, and edited by the students in Vivian Wade-Banks’s Theater Arts class from Massey Hill Classical High School in Fayetteville, NC. The Heartbeat of Sunset Beach focuses on the Old Bridge and Sunset Beach and includes interviews with area residents, representatives of town government, businesses, former bridge tenders, NCDOT workers, and volunteers with the Old Bridge. It is no doubt that you will recognize familiar faces.
This is the perfect way to celebrate the Old Bridge’s birthday. In 2016, the Old Bridge and Tender House celebrate five years in its present location at 109 Shoreline Drive West, Sunset Beach NC. It’s hard to believe but it has been five years since the Old Bridge went from rising and falling with the tide on the Intracoastal Waterway to becoming Sunset Beach’s only museum. Since the bridge’s move, thousands of people have visited the site and museum to learn more about the one-lane pontoon swing bridge and its role in the community. People have shared their memories and stories or increasingly so been introduced to the Old Bridge for the first time.
The ramps, center span, and Old Bridge Tender House were moved five years ago in January and February of 2011. The Old Bridge Preservation Society purchased the Old Bridge from English Construction for $1 in February 2011. Each year it has been in its new location the Old Bridge Preservation Society has made improvements to the structure and grounds and developed programming to introduce visitors to different aspects of the bridge and the Sunset Beach community. Proceeds from the April 5th showing of The Heartbeat of Sunset Beach will go to continue its work.
Mark your calendars and be sure to wish the Old Bridge a huge “Happy Birthday” by attending the April 5, 6:30 birthday party. Cake and coffee will be served prior to the 7:00 showing of The Heartbeat of Sunset Beach. Tickets are $15 at the door. The place is the Ingram Planetarium, 7625 High Market Street, Sunset Beach.
